Dr Naing Tint PhD, FRCOphth

Dr Naing Tint is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh where he specialises in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery at the forefront of technology and innovation in vision correction. A meticulous surgeon with outstanding surgical safety and precise outcomes, Dr Tint has a long list of satisfied patients from all walks of life from members of the general public and key workers through to celebrities and titans of industry; all of which came to Dr Tint for a positive result and diligent treatment.

Dr Tint grew up in Fife and graduated from the University of St Andrews and Manchester Medical Schools in 2000. He subsequently undertook Ophthalmic training in Dundee, Manchester and Nottingham. Upon completion of general Ophthalmology training he undertook 1.5 years Cornea Fellowship at the prestigious and world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He undertook additional Cornea and Refractive Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne before returning to become a Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Having been trained by internationally recognised experts in Cornea and Refractive Eye Surgery, Dr Tint subsequently returned home to Scotland where he is a Consultant Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion. His Refractive Surgery practice is based solely in the private sector where he is a part of Eye Surgery Scotland working out of The Edinburgh Clinic.

Dr Tint undertakes more than 500 cataract and lens surgeries annually as well as performing corneal transplantations and refractive procedures. He is a dedicated surgeon with an outstanding safety profile. His complication rate to date (2019) is less than 0.2%, vastly lower than the UK national average of 2-3%. Safety and comfort is of the highest priority for Dr Tint and he would be happy to answer any safety questions and will provide where possible his rates for specific complications.

Research and Teaching

Dr Tint is active in both research and teaching. He undertakes teaching to medical students, trainee eye surgeons as well as optometrists and general practitioners. He is also active in research and has been involved in numerous clinical studies. He continues to undertake research on aspects of corneal disease as well as corneal tissue engineering for which he has been awarded a PhD.

He is currently the lead for surgical simulation training in Lothian and is also involved in simulation teaching at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London.

Media Appearances

Dr Tint has appeared in the media for his expertise in Corneal transplantation and cataract and lens surgery such as the Scotsman and Scottish Television (STV).​

In 2015 Dr Tint undertook the first Descemet Membrane Keratoplasty (DMEK) in Scotland. This new technique delicately transplanting 20 micron (1/50th mm) thick corneal membrane to treat patients with corneal endothelial cell failure in a condition known as Fuch’s Endothelial Dystrophy.

Charitable Work

Dr Tint undertakes regular charitable work in South East Asia. He regularly travels to Myanmar to help train local surgeons in surgical techniques for cataract and corneal transplants. He is part of a collaborative training program spearheaded by a group of Australian Surgeons.
